In some regions, young girls are still subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage, which often leads to them dropping out of school [1] and hinders the development of the region. Pastor David and Catherine have made it their mission to rescue girls from these cruel traditions and give them a better life through education.

Pastor David and his wife Catherine are the driving force behind their efforts in Kamila, North Pokot. Since 2009, they have been caring for vulnerable girls and providing them with a safe environment and access to education. Their dedication and commitment to these girls has helped many of them change their lives for the better.
Pastor David and Catherine work tirelessly to combat the practice of FGM and forced marriage in their community. Through their efforts, they have managed to rescue many girls from these harmful traditions and give them the opportunity to pursue an education and a better future.

Ester and Lilian are among the 13 girls that Pastor David and Catherine look after. Like the other girls, they have been given the chance to escape the harmful traditions of their community and focus on their education with the support and guidance of their caring foster family.

In rural areas of Kenya, many people face various challenges, such as lack of access to education and basic resources. Hand of Progress, as an organisation, is dedicated to supporting school children in Kenya by providing them with access to Bibles, learning aids and much more [1].
We support girls who have fled forced marriage and circumcision.
In Ortum, we are unfortunately personally and first-hand confronted with forced marriage and female circumcision in the region. We were deeply shocked to meet girls who are directly affected or who had to seek shelter in school from the villages in order not to be forcibly married.
The prerequisite for marriage is circumcision of the female genitalia. Although this practice has been banned in Kenya for years and is punishable by imprisonment, it is still practised in remote areas. It is true that young girls from the age of 9 are forced to marry old men in exchange for wealth. This is an “offer” that many poor families cannot resist.
