We are building sustainable sanitation systems that include a complete sanitation chain in which all five core elements are present and functioning, i.e. collection, emptying, transport, treatment and recycling.
Work in the field is carried out by local expertise together with professional government advisors or volunteers from abroad.
Have you ever wondered about the “sanitation” experiences of many children in rural Kenyan schools? I attended Mukuyu Primary School in Kitale in western Kenya, here is a small part of my story below:
This everyday situation plays out every day in the schools of Mukuyu, a village community in the town of Kitale in a rural region of western Kenya. The non-profit association “Hand of Progress e.V.” was founded in order to bring about lasting change to these miserable conditions in the region and to give the local people new perspectives. We would like to show and enable the residents and the school children new perspectives on the basis of Christian charity.
Hand of Progress e.V. supports schools that do not yet have access to clean water, safe toilets, hygienic sanitation and hygiene education.
Access to clean water and toilets is a human right and we want this to be a normal part of daily life for all children everywhere.
Building safe toilets requires more expertise that schools and marginalized communities typically do not have. That’s why we work with our local partners and communities to develop cost-effective and sustainable sanitation and water solutions that meet the needs of school children, and provide the basic knowledge needed to maintain them.
We also work with local and national governments to find solutions for providing water, toilets and sanitation.
Hand of Progress e.V. is an aid organization that specializes in long-term solutions in the field of WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene). We are not geared to act in crisis situations. However, if an emergency situation arises in a region where we already operate, we will support relief efforts in any way we can.

Bibles are distributed only to children going from elementary school to secondary school. It is one of the reference books for the subject of Christian Religious Education (CRE), which is one of the compulsory examination subjects in Kenyan schools, but not all children can afford a Bible. In this way, Bibles create equal learning opportunities. In addition, students are encouraged to engage in the Word of God and trust God while working diligently in school.
On our website there is the possibility to donate for specific projects or project areas. If you transfer money directly to our account, you can indicate in the subject line of the transfer a project for which the donation should be used. However, if a project is overfunded, we reserve the right to distribute the donations to other projects.
For our part, we would like it to last at least a year. But a sponsorship is a voluntary donation and of course you help only as long as you want. The duration of a sponsorship is not limited, you can terminate it at any time without notice. With us, a sponsorship runs as long as the child is in primary and secondary school.
The best way to reach us is by email at info@hand-of-progress.org.
Many schools do this: they build latrine toilets (a hole in the ground) or assign an area away from classrooms for open defecation. However, the holes fill up very quickly and the children are forced to walk in the open air. This is dangerous and leads directly to the spread of deadly diseases. It is well known that outdoor human waste spreads disease and contaminates water sources.
Often poor communities are unaware that they have a human right to basic water and sanitation. Local governments also often do not see the provision of water and safe sanitation as an urgent need.
The positive impact of our work on health and education leads communities to become aware of their rights. It also calls on local governments, whose job it is to provide for these rights, to reconsider their stance.
Due to the lack of basic drinking water supplies, many people in rural Kenya and remote areas have to travel long, arduous distances every day to reach water sources.
Schools have not been spared from these problems either. School children are responsible for most of their own daily water supply and spend many hours fetching water. They have little time for extracurricular activities.
Schoolgirls are particularly threatened by this custom. They are often forced to stay home during their period – for cultural reasons or because there are no provisions for proper menstrual hygiene at school. As a result, they are often exposed to assault and sexual violence.
The schools we support with water and sanitation services are already in poor or marginalized communities. However, we do what is financially possible to help children in special need situations.
It is often necessary to enable children to attend school by paying school fees and/or buying school books. Currently, we are supporting girls rescued from early marriage and circumcision.
You can take over a sponsorship and provide a child with a long-term education.
If you would like to support Hand of Progress e.V., your donation will support the construction of school toilets, water wells and sanitation facilities. Your support enables a decent environment for school children and your community.
